- This book project was intended as a comprehensive study of the Pittidae Family in 4 parts, but could not be completed dued to Gould's death
- The original consists of a complete first section of text written by Gould and 10 plates
- The second section of text, which was edited by Richard Bowdler Sharpe after Gould's death, contains no illustrations
- The illustrations were largely produced by William Matthew Hart and Henry Constantine Richter based on Gould's sketches and are famous for their colourful hand-colouring and lifelike depictions
- Each plate depicts the birds in their natural habitat
- From a scientific perspecitve, the work offers detailed descriptions of the morphology, distribution and behaviour of the species and serves as an important source for 19th-centur ornithology
