• Monograph of the Pittidae was published between 1880 and 1881 and is John Gould's final work
• This book project was intended as a comprehensive study of the Pittidae Family in 4 parts, but could not be completed dued to Gould's death
• The original consists of a complete first section of text written by Gould and 10 plates
• The second section of text, which was edited by Richard Bowdler Sharpe after Gould's death, contains no illustrations
• The illustrations were largely produced by William Matthew Hart and Henry Constantine Richter based on Gould's sketches and are famous for their colourful hand-colouring and lifelike depictions
• Each plate depicts the birds in their natural habitat
• From a scientific perspecitve, the work offers detailed descriptions of the morphology, distribution and behaviour of the species and serves as an important source for 19th-centur ornithology

• The reduced-size edition offered here has been supplemented with the 10 missing plates
• These additional illustrations were taken from Goud's monumental works "Birds of Asia, Volume 5" and "Birds of New Guinea, Volume 4"
